Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services
Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services is a not-for-profit community-based, charitable organization that assists individuals and communities to be productive members of Canadian society. Polycultural offers a broad range of inclusive, community-led support programs for people of all ages and nationalities. They have been working for over 40 years to promote a healthy, vibrant GTA and Region of Peel by offering services tailored to seniors, youth, women, families and newcomers to Canada.
With their experience in working with these groups, Polycultural has identified an opportunity to work with local children from the Mississauga area. The objective of the project is to raise awareness to some of the growing life challenges that face today’s young people and to provide the skills and tools that enable them to effectively overcome those challenges.
In Forma Theatre is facilitating interactive and engaging arts-based workshops to explore these issues. Many of the children do not have the confidence or comfort level to explore these activities and the community at large on their own. These children are all newcomers or refugees from a variety of different backgrounds. We are currently working with the group to create and perform an original play about the challenges that they face, and then present this play to local youth audiences in the community. This project is one of many that we have facilitated with PICs and we have no doubt that it will be an enriching experience for all the participants involved. Our work will culminate in a community performance and celebration.
